The very idea of celebrating a special day for GSDs has been brewing since 2001 when Peter George de Corban's first birthday was celebrated with much pomp. As a puppy he was weak and ill and vets had warned that he would not make it even to the 6 month mark. So his first birthday was almost a miracle for his doting family and friends.
The first ever official celebration was held in 2011, almost 2 years after Peter's death in 2009.
In a nod to the breed's German heritage, the celebrations include cutting a special Black Forest cake, which is enjoyed by the proud GSD owners and enthusiasts. A doggy version of the cake is served to the canines.
Service is a big part of the celebration. Charity events and fundraisers to help dog shelters/rescues is a highlight of the mission.
